At minimum, you’ll want a well-fitted endurance saddle, a breathable saddle pad, a properly fitted bridle or halter combination, and hoof boots or shoes suited to varied terrain. It’s also worth investing in a good quality girth and a hydration/electrolyte system for your horse, since endurance rides place different demands on fit and comfort than shorter rides.

Endurance tack is built specifically for comfort and durability over long distances rather than short rides or competition rounds. Endurance saddle pads use breathable, moisture-wicking materials to reduce heat and rubbing over many hours in the saddle, while endurance breastplates are typically padded and contoured to prevent chafing during extended movement.

Endurance bridles tend to be lighter weight with fewer bulky fittings, often designed to be comfortable enough for a horse to wear (and sometimes drink and graze in) during long rest stops on the trail. If you’re new to the sport, it’s worth starting with a well-fitted breathable pad and breastplate, since comfort over distance matters more here than it does in shorter disciplines.
