A girth (also called a cinch in Western riding) is the strap that goes under your horse’s belly to hold the saddle securely in place. Girths come in different materials and shapes depending on your horse’s conformation and the type of riding you do.

Measure around your horse’s barrel at the girth area, roughly a hand’s width behind the front legs, then add a small allowance depending on the buckle or ring style your saddle uses. It’s worth double-checking the fit once the saddle is on, as girths that are too tight or too loose can cause rubbing or saddle slippage.

Thread the latigo strap through the saddle’s rigging D-ring, then down through the cinch ring, back up through the D-ring, and secure it with a latigo knot or buckle depending on your saddle style.

Take your time with the knot the first few times as a poorly tied latigo can come loose mid-ride.

The safest way is to have it professionally stretched or steamed by a hatter, as at-home methods can damage the felt if done incorrectly.

If you’re doing it yourself, a light steam combined with a hat stretcher (rather than force alone) gives the most even, lasting result.
