Saddle size is based on your seat size (measured in inches across the seat) and your horse’s back, specifically the width of their shoulders and the shape of their withers.

As a starting point, measure from the pommel to the centre of the cantle for seat size, and check the saddle’s tree width against your horse’s back shape (narrow, medium, or wide).

If you’re between sizes or unsure, it’s worth getting a saddle fitter to check in person, since an ill-fitting saddle can cause real discomfort for your horse.

A few signs to check: consistent contact along the saddle panels with no bridging or pinching, at least 2-3 fingers of clearance over the withers, and a level seat when the saddle is placed on your horse’s back without a pad. Watch for behavioural cues too like girthiness, bucking, or reluctance to move forward can all point to a poor saddle fit. If in doubt, a qualified saddle fitter can properly assess this in person.

Rug sizing is based on length, not height. Start by measuring from the centre of your horse’s chest, along their side, to the point of the buttock (where the tail meets the body). This measurement in inches usually corresponds directly to the rug size (e.g. a 66″ measurement typically needs a size 6’6″).

It’s worth checking each brand’s individual size chart, since fit can vary slightly between manufacturers.
