At minimum you’ll want a certified riding helmet, boots with a small heel (to prevent your foot slipping through the stirrup), and comfortable, close-fitting pants like jodhpurs or breeches to avoid chafing. Beyond that, what you wear depends on the discipline, the weather, and whether you’re training or competing. Gloves and a body protector are also worth considering for jumping or young/green horses.

A riding crop is a short, flexible tool used to give a light tap as an aid or reinforcement cue to your horse, most commonly used in show jumping and eventing. It’s not meant to be used for punishment. It’s a communication tool to reinforce a leg or voice aid your horse may not have responded to.

Jodhpurs extend fully to the ankle and are typically worn with jodhpur or paddock boots, making them a popular choice for younger riders and everyday riding.

Breeches stop at the calf and are designed to be worn with tall riding boots, and are more commonly seen in competition and dressage settings.

All riding helmets sold on our site meet recognised international safety standards. Certifications vary by brand.
